Peninsula Neighborhood meeting April 17, 2007
Joe Gillum opened the meeting by welcoming neighbors and guest to the meeting.
- Sign Toppers- Ben gave an update on the neighborhood sign toppers. The signs are currently in production. 26 signs will be produced for the neighborhood. The neighborhood has 24 intersections and will have 2 extra signs for future use.
- Treasures report- Madeline gave a report on the current neighborhood finances.
- Trinity Vote-Guest Speaker Angela Hunt district 14 city council member spoke about the referendum she and the group TrintiyVote hopes to bring before Dallas in the November election. The referendum will ask for a review of the toll road designed to be part of the Trinity River Corridor project. In 1998 $246,000,000 were approved by Dallas voters for the Trinity project. $84,000,000 was allotted for a toll road to run along the Trinity levee system. Recent changes by the Core of Engineers have moved the toll road plans away from the levee system and into the park taking up 44 acres, 1/3 of the land assigned to the park. TrinityVote hopes to delay construction of the toll road until further reviews of the road can be made. 50,000 votes are needed for the referendum. Volunteers will be asking for voters signatures during the upcoming election. For additional information contact www.trinityvote.com
- Yard Sale- This year the yard sale will be held in the parking lot at Buckner and North cliff on May 5th. Items can be dropped off May 2nd between 2-4 pm at the shopping center.
- Crime Watch- Park Downer spoke about how to protect your house from crime. Volunteers in Patrol will hold an education meeting in May. Contact Park Downer for more information on how to volunteer. rpd@utdallasalumni.com
- Social events- Janice Parson discussed the upcoming June 9th neighborhood swim party to be held at Kurt Kretsinger’s house on Lake Highlands. Volunteers are needed to help with the party contact Janice Parson for more information. janiceparson@ellenterry.com
- Taste of White Rock Lake Booklets- Mel Cyrak discussed the neighborhood fund raising booklets. Booklets can be purchased at the upcoming yard sales and by contacting Mark Wilson at mark@markwilson.net
- District 9 city council members- The three candidates for the district 9 city council seat, Sheffie Kadane, Jill Kotvis and Al Turner, each answered questions on crime, development and other neighborhood issues. Each candidate was asked what they felt to be the most important issue of the election. Early voting begins April 30th. Neighbors can vote at theBath House on May 12th.

The Meeting was called to order by Joe Gillum. 31 neighborhood members signed in. The new board members were introduced. Joe Gillum- President, Mark Wilson- Vice President, Madeline Cyrak- Treasurer, Kelly Vickers- Secretary.Sign Toppers- At the last meeting in October a vote was taken to decide the color for the neighborhood street sign toppers. The vote ended in a tie between the colors Red, Black and Blue. At the 1/9 meeting it was suggested that a topper in the national park colors of brown and yellow be put up for a vote. A vote was taken again and the colors of brown and yellow won. Madeline will work on the final design and cost of the sign toppers. Recycling- John Barlow with the City of Dallas Recycling program spoke to the group about the new “to good to throw away program”. The new 96 gallon blue trash cans can be used by neighbors who have their trash picked up by automated trucks. Neighbors who have manual trash pick up should continue to use the blue trash bags. All plastics 1 thru 7 can be recycled. Styrofoam, aluminum and products with food waste can not be recycled. More information about the Dallas recycling program can be found on the Dallas website www.dallascityhall.com/html/recycling.html.Crime Watch- Sr. Cpl Ron Carpenter with the Dallas Police force spoke about how to keep our neighborhood and homes crime free. He suggests we remember the 3 Ds of crime prevention Defend your property. Detect crime by watching out for your neighbors and Dial the police any time you see something out of the ordinary. CPL. Carpenter commented on how low our neighborhood crime rate was for 2006 compared to other neighborhoods. Keep up the good work Neighbors!!!By-laws- Mel Cyrak discussed changing the neighborhood by laws and incorporating the neighborhood association. Joe Gillum suggested a committee be organized to review the changes.The Dallas Academy- Joe Gillum discussed the Dallas Academy’s plans to change the current zoning to exclude the deceleration lane in front of the school on Buckner Ave. The school offered the following concession to the neighborhood to help with the traffic. 2 school members will monitor the traffic in the morning and afternoon; Enrollment will be capped at 210 students, a staggered start and stop time for the school day, and no graduation will be held on campus. A vote was taken to decide if the neighborhood association would take a stand to support or oppose the issue. It was decided by a vote of 9 to 5 that the neighborhood would oppose the zoning changes. Members were asked to speak at the Dallas Planning and Zoning commission meeting on Thursday 1/11/07. The next PNA meeting will be held at 7pm on April 17th at the Bath House.
